Find your true potential and passion in the dark depths amid infinitesimal light sparks with persistent curiosity and positive inquiry.

Further consider Brene Brown's words regarding relationships:

"The mark of a wild heart is living out the paradox of love in our lives.  It's the ability to be tough and tender, excited and scared, brave and afraid--all in the same moment.  it's showing up in our vulnerability and our courage, being both fierce and kind."

Rainer Maria Rilke

IFS trainer Carol Graybeal suggests loving the questions as you ask things like:

What is wrong with me?

Why does no one like me?

Will my life ever get better?

Will I ever get over this problem?

Why can't I do better?

My hope is to help you explore these questions with compassion and confidence, rather than judgment and to help you move forward with positive psychological inquiry.

Spiritual inquiry, in conjunction with psychological inquiry, helps connect us to our deepest Self, which is integral in self-corrective healing.   Sprirtual inquiry, which religious leaders throughout the world consider, may lead to such questions as: why are we here, what is the meaning of life, how do I understand death, how can I become more awake, what is compassion – what are your questions?

An old saying is that the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.  It is a saying containing wisdom, warmth and mutuality.  Similarly, facing the wilderness of the unknown with support, helps to hold hope with balance and strength.

My personal identity is as a married  Caucasian woman with two grown sons and a granddaughter and grandson.   One of my sons is here in Colorado Springs, along with his daughter and works on behalf of Mustang Horses with the Cloud Foundation, which has produced a number of films on Mustangs and sponsored legislation on their behalf on a national level.   My other son lives in Alaska with his wife and son.  I am privileged to have my grandson be a registered Native American through my daughter-in-law, who is a member of the Aleutian Tribe in Alaska.   She works for a mental health center in Ketchikan and my son, her husband, runs a program to support students from all the schools in Ketchikan with additional recreational and educational opportunities.

I grew up on a farm in Kansas, as the oldest of six children and obtained a bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Kansas.   My mother was a registered nurse and worked at Ft. Logan State Mental Hospital in  Colorado, at one point in her career, after I was grown and earlier in Kansas worked with the Kickapoo Native American Tribe.   My father and his parents both had Dalmatians, so they have a heritage in my family and beloved memory for me from my early years.   I settled in Colorado as an adult and obtained a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Denver.  I met my husband of many years in Colorado.  After my children were born, I got my first dog, a Dalmatian.   Since then I have always had Dalmatians and added Russell Terriers in 2012..  I lived in California from 1986 to 2005 and followed through on a love of literature, writing and art there,  picking up a second degree in studio art and creative writing. at Mills College.  In 2005 my family returned to Colorado and I obtained a second master's degree in American Literature from Colorado State University in 2014.

In 1994 I began a love affair with horses and competed in trail trials and other western riding events.   I was president of the Trail Trials Organization for Alameda County and competed statewide,   I am trained in Natural Horsemanship Methods, as are my horses and have worked with Charles Wilheim, a John Lyons certified Trainer and the Parelli organization extensively.    I love trail riding, as well as western and cowboy dressage.     I have participated in showing my dogs in performance areas of obedience, Fast Cat, rally and Lure Coursing.   My partners in  adjunctive play therapy currently are my tan and white female Russell Terrier, Ch Annabella Xmas Angel and Ch Rivendell's Beau Bentley another Russell Terrier and my dark bay Tennessee Walker mare, Lady Mocha Choca Laca and Pistol, a Pryor Mountain Mustang from the Cloud Foundation Freedom Herd.   Annabella is recognized as a Companion Level dog in Obedience through AKC and is from Spanky's Kennels in western Colorado.   Bentley has a CGC from AKC and is from the Rivendell Kennel in Canada and also has titles in Lure COursing and Agility..  My mare has had extensive training with children at Cloud 9 Walkers in Texas. and won first place twice in Pleasure classes with the National Walking Horse Association. and is trained to drive carriages.    I also have a wonderful mustang bay gelding named Pistol from the Cloud Foundation Freedom Herd originating in the Pryor Mountains of Montana , who is a love and trained by Lisa Ski in Loveland, Colorado in western and English riding.  i am looking forward to dressage, trail  and driving events with these beautiful horses.

My Dalmatian, GCH Monumental Always the Rockstar at Ponderosa Sky is working toward Obedience and Agility titles.   His sister, Ch Always Up to Something, also known as Lily, has titles in Canine Good Citizenship, Fast Cat and Lure Coursing.   These Dalmatians are from the Monumental Show Dogs in Monument, Colorado    Lily is my guard dog, generally retired from showing and rules my front yard and my couch, when not in her crate.   Annabella is retired from dog showing and rules the deck and my rocking chair, when not in her crate.   The girls think they are in charge and everyone takes turns being out.   And just to be a little more challenging, I have added a new puppy Dalmatian to the our show dog home, a little girl I am naming Dakota Snowood Secret Wish and calling Mandoline or Mandie for short!  She is from Dakota and Snowood show dogs in Illinois!  I am so excited about her as she is a gorgeous!

My experience and training in counseling includes working with adults, teens and children in mental health settings for over a decade and  seventeen years working with children, teens and their families involved in domestic and international adoption, as well as experience in settings such as schools, hospitals and on Ft. Carson.   My  appointment availability at Ponderosa Sky Counseling is generally Monday through Friday with some evening and weekend availability on a limited basis.

EMDR is an integrative psychotherapy approach known for using CBT, a Solution Focus, Psychodynamic thinking, DBT, IFS, Somatic Experiential and Hypnosis elements to resolve trauma, manage affect, emotional regulation and strengthen a positive belief neural network.   It has been so successful and moreso than many other evidenced-based treatment approaches that it is now my preferred method of choice to integrate with other therapuetic methods for maximum treatment success when working with adults, teens or children.

CBT and DBT

CBT and DBT are foundational evidence-based treatments used with mood disorders.    DBT is particularly helpful with depression  ins adults and teens.   CBT is used with adults, teens and children struggling with anxiety, anger and behavior.    TFCBT is used with children and teens who have suffered abuse, sexual abuse or are in grief.

Play Therapy

Through the Play Therapy Association my training has been in Adlerian Play Therapy, Synergistic Play Therapy, Theraplay, Filial Play Therapy and Child-Centered Play Therapy.  My focus  is on using  Filial Play Therapy and Child-Centered Play Therapy to buildi attachment and improve self-esteem, focus and behavior.

Annabella is an AKC Companion dog and UKC champion primarily used in animal- assisted therapy at this time.    Bentley is a Canine Good Citizen and AKC champion who is working on his obedience work.  They are tiny dogs who would love to help support you.    Positive dog psychology is used to build trust with both the dog and human.

Natural Horsemanship principles of Pat Parelli are used to build confidence in both the horse and human.   Lady Mocha Choca Laca is a Tennesse Walker bay mare trained with Natural Horsemanship methods and was used extensively with children at Cloud 9 Walkers in Texas.   Pistol will be looking on as my competition horse.  He is a bronze golden-toned bay geld Mustang with flashy socks and a blaze.  He is a Cloud Foundation horse from the Pryor Mountain area of Montana and can be seem online with the Freedom Herd.  He was a stallion with his own herd until a couple of  years ago but became a bit too feisty with his own father, Trigger, so he is no longer wild.  He has been trained by Lisa Ski in Ft. Collins, CO using natural horsemanship methods.  He has decided he loves to be spoiled with all the amenities of a barn life.  Two beautiful Dalmatians, an AKC Grand Champion named Cash and AKC Champion named Lily may also be spied supervising the activites of the property and are not being used for animal-assisted therapy, as they are very owner-oriented.

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk says that "trauma resolution pendulates between states of exploration and safety, between language and body, between remembering the past and feeling alive in the present" in his website, which is the first one listed under resources.

Note that the practice of sandplay is grounded in Jungian psychology, Child Developmental Theory of the modern era, Margaret Lowenfeld's World Technique and Tibetan Buddhist Wisdom.  It is known to help trauma and a variety of emotional and behavioral struggles.   The hands guide and speak for the heart.

Sandplay and EMDR access non-verbal memories, emotions, unconscious material and the body to promote natural healing.

These methods are cited as therapies to be considered in the treatment of trauma by Dr. Bessel A. van der Kolk.   Many sandplay therapists use EMDR and Sandplay together.   Somatic and Trauma Focused EMDR work to ease pain and  has been found to be effective with a range of mood disorders for both children and adults.   Dr. Bessel A. van der Kolk  notes animal-assisted therapy as an adjunct treatment for trauma.   He has invited into his trauma research the sequential-neuro development work of Dr. Lorraine Freedle, PhD. a prominent sandplay therapist in Hawaii and a neuropsychologist.   See the link to his website.  Dr. Freedle and Dr. ,Gita Morena, a San Diego based author and professor  of psychology are my main consultants guiding my work in sandplay, along with my process work with well-known Denver Jungian Analyst and authur Laura Howe and my analysis with Denver Jungian Analysist Dr. Laurel Dodson.

Relationship Work

Dr. Dodson's work with  Dr. Virginia Satir, along with my own extended workshop experienes with Dr. Satir, shaped my use of psycho0drama methods in family work.    Dr. Jan Raynak, MD  and Dr. Suzanne Pope, PhD at the Colorado Institute for Marriage and Family Therapy in Boulder, CO furthered my understanding and practice of family systems and marital relationship work.  My recent work with tthe Gottman method has been very inspiring for the emphasis on love, positive connection and hope with awareness of body, memory and

the non-verbal and verbal in promoting natural healing in relationships.

It was Edith's daughter, Meredith, who realized that there was something wrong with her mother. Meredith kept calling her mother on the phone, and was concerned when there was no answer. She left work in a panic, and drove over to her mother's house. Edith had fallen down her stairs, and gashed her head.
